It's a new year...
... and I already feel behind.
Well really, I’ve been feeling this way since January 1. A pressure to keep up, to set big goals and make sure everything is in place to have a successful year.
The other day I got a notification from instagram looking back on a story from last year … where I was writing about the exact same thing. Feeling behind. Feeling pressure. Wanting to have clarity at the beginning of the year and leave all the messiness behind.
Our mindsets really matter in how we are guided in our lives.Your mindset is a set of beliefs that shape how you interact with the world, with yourself and others. Your thinking patterns, feelings and behaviours are all influenced by your mindset. And what you believe about yourself has a direct impact on what you want and whether you achieve it.
I realized I was operating in a fixed mindset about the beginning of the year. Even while running a group to ease into the new year, I am spinning my wheels in the background. A fixed mindset tells me that I need to hustle at the beginning of the year to set myself up for success. It assumes that my situation is fixed - static, unchanging, just the way it is, how I need to operate.
Perfectionism is a fixed mindset. It says “I need to do everything perfectly in order to be valued”. This leaves no room for growth or failure.
I want to embrace a fluid growth mindset about this new year. Feeling behind, is not the same as falling behind. What if you can just change the flagpoles? Make it easier for yourself? Take it one step at a time, or one day at a time instead of putting the weight of a full year into just a few weeks?
A growth mindset is more process oriented than achievement oriented. In the process, growth-minded people willingly embrace challenges and imperfection, viewing feedback as a source of information and other’s successes as inspiration - not competition.
I want to embrace this more. I want to shift my energy from limitation to possibility. And see what happens this year.
So, I created a mini retreat to reflect this mindset.
